Building Joey's Angels: How a Small Women's Study Group Became a Community of Champions

Poker has given me trophies, final tables, unforgettable hands and friendships that have lasted far longer than any tournament. But some of the most meaningful moments of my poker life have not happened while I was holding the cards.

They have happened while watching someone I coached trust herself for the first time. They have happened when a student recognized a pattern she would have missed a month earlier, made the disciplined fold she once believed she could never make, survived a difficult table, reached a final table or returned from a tournament carrying a trophy.

Those moments became the foundation of Joey's Angels Women's Intuitive Poker School.

Joey's Angels did not begin as a polished company with a large marketing plan. It began with a simple belief: women deserve a supportive place to learn poker, develop confidence and discover the kind of player they are capable of becoming.

What started as a small study group has grown into a community of students, champions, repeat champions, mentors and friends united by a deeper approach to the game. We study poker strategy. We study people. We study ourselves. And we learn how to bring all three together when the pressure is real.

The Beginning

The idea developed through years of playing tournaments, studying human behavior, coaching players and watching women navigate poker environments that were not always designed to make them feel welcome.

Poker rooms can be intimidating. The terminology is unfamiliar. The pace can be fast. Some players are loud, dismissive or overly confident. Newer players may feel embarrassed to ask questions. Even experienced players can begin doubting themselves when they are surrounded by aggressive personalities.

I saw talented women who understood more than they gave themselves credit for. I saw players with excellent instincts who were afraid to trust them. I saw intelligent students who knew the fundamentals but struggled to execute when the pot became large. I saw women who had the ability to win but needed a stronger technical foundation, a more reliable decision process, or simply someone who believed they belonged at the table.

I also saw something else. Women supporting one another could create a learning environment unlike anything else in poker.

That insight became Joey's Angels. The original group was small. The vision was not.

I wanted to create a poker school where each student could learn without judgment, ask honest questions, examine mistakes without shame and develop a style that felt authentic. The goal was never to manufacture identical players. The goal was to help each Angel become the strongest version of herself.

Why a Women's Intuitive Poker School

Poker education has become more advanced than ever. Players can study charts, solvers, ranges, frequencies, expected value, combinatorics and game theory. All of those tools matter, and they are part of what we teach.

But poker is not played by charts. It is played by people. Every person at the table brings a different history, emotional state, risk tolerance, personality, motivation and level of experience.

That is why I built a school around personalized player development and intuitive poker.

Intuitive poker does not mean abandoning mathematics or making decisions based on random feelings. It means learning how to combine technical knowledge with observation, self-awareness, experience and pattern recognition. An intuitive player learns to notice:

• Changes in betting patterns
• Unusual timing
• Stack-size pressure
• Shifts in an opponent's confidence
• Emotional reactions
• Physical behavior
• Inconsistencies in the story of a hand
• Her own fear, impatience or attachment
• The difference between intuition and anxiety

The cards provide part of the information. The opponent provides more. Your own mind may provide the most important information of all. Joey's Angels was created to teach women how to use every legitimate source of information available to them.

Personalized Player Development

The heart of Joey's Angels is personalization, because no two players enter the group with the same background.

One student may need help understanding preflop ranges. Another may already understand ranges but play too passively after the flop. One may be naturally aggressive but struggle with patience. Another may be observant and intuitive but lack confidence. One may need short-stack strategy. Another may need help controlling tilt after a bad beat. A player who has never entered a live tournament requires a different coaching approach from a repeat champion preparing for another major event.

Generic coaching can provide useful information, but transformation happens when that information is connected to the individual.

I study the player, not only the cards. I look at how she processes information, what causes uncertainty, which situations create fear and where her natural strengths appear. Then we build from there.

The objective is not to teach every Angel to think exactly like me. It is to help her understand how she thinks, and to make that thinking clearer, stronger and more profitable.

Building Confidence at the Table

Confidence is one of the most misunderstood concepts in poker. It does not mean believing you will always win. It does not mean acting louder than everyone else. It does not mean refusing to fold.

Real confidence is quieter. It is the ability to make a decision, explain the reasoning behind it and accept that the result may still be unfavorable. A confident player can fold a strong hand. She can admit she does not know something. She can ask a question without feeling embarrassed. She can lose a pot and remain emotionally present for the next hand.

Many women come to poker carrying unnecessary doubt. They may have been underestimated in previous careers, relationships, classrooms or competitive environments. They may have learned to second-guess themselves or wait for permission before acting.

Poker exposes those patterns quickly. The table asks:

• Will you speak clearly?
• Will you protect your hand?
• Will you make the raise?
• Will you trust your preparation?
• Will you remain calm when someone challenges you?
• Will you make the disciplined decision even when no one else understands it?

Joey's Angels helps students build confidence through knowledge, repetition, accountability and experience. Confidence is not given. It is earned one decision at a time.

A Place Without Ego or Intimidation

One of my earliest priorities was creating an environment where students could learn without fear of humiliation.

Poker culture can sometimes reward ego. People may criticize a decision without understanding the context. They may use complicated language to appear superior. They may treat beginners as though they do not belong. That is not how Joey's Angels operates.

Inside our community, questions are welcomed. Mistakes are studied. Different opinions are discussed. Victories are celebrated. Difficult sessions are processed honestly. No one is expected to pretend she understands something when she does not.

A strong poker community does not make students dependent on the coach. It teaches them how to think independently. My responsibility is to explain the reasoning, provide a framework and help each student build her own decision process.

We can disagree about a hand and still learn from one another. We can compete fiercely and still support one another. We can celebrate a championship without pretending the journey was easy. That balance is part of what makes Joey's Angels special.

But we also examine the parts of poker that are harder to place on a chart. Why did you hesitate? Why did that opponent's bet feel unusual? Did you fold because the evidence supported it, or because you were afraid? Did you call because the range was too wide, or because you wanted to prove you could not be bluffed? Were you patient, or were you passive? Were you aggressive, or were you trying to recover a loss?

These questions turn poker into a tool for self-awareness. The player who understands herself has an advantage over the player who studies only her opponents.

The Role of Intuition

Intuition is one of the central pillars of Joey's Angels, and one of the most frequently misunderstood.

Intuition is not magic. It is often the subconscious recognition of patterns developed through study, observation and experience. A student may sense that an opponent's story does not make sense before she can fully explain why.

Instead of blindly trusting or dismissing that feeling, we investigate it. What changed? Was the bet size unusual? Did the timing differ from earlier hands? Does the player have enough value combinations? Is the opponent capable of bluffing? Did the body language change? Is the student feeling genuine clarity, or is anxiety creating urgency?

The strongest intuitive decision is one that survives examination. We teach students to combine the signal with logic. That process turns instinct into a skill.

The Influence of Khemset and Holistic Poker

My work with Andrew “LuckyChewy” Lichtenberger and Khemset had a powerful influence on the philosophy behind Joey's Angels.

Khemset explores poker as more than a technical competition. It examines strategy, mindset, self-awareness, emotional regulation, intuition, coherence and the relationship between poker and life. That holistic approach helped me better articulate something I had believed for years: a player's mind, body, emotions and strategy are not separate systems. They are connected.

A student may know the mathematically correct decision but fail to execute because she is afraid of elimination. She may recognize weakness but hesitate because her confidence has been damaged. She may understand tournament strategy but lose access to it when frustration takes over.

Technical knowledge is only valuable when the player can use it. That is why Joey's Angels includes mindset development alongside strategy. We work toward a state in which preparation, observation, emotional control and intuition support one another.

The goal is not to remove emotion. The goal is to prevent emotion from making the decision without permission.

From Students to Champions

The most exciting part of building Joey's Angels has been watching students turn study into results. Our community includes champions, national title winners, final-table competitors and repeat champions.

One of our proudest achievements came when a Joey's Angels student captured the LIPS Women's National Championship. That victory represented far more than one tournament result. It represented preparation. It represented courage. It represented the ability to make decisions under pressure. It represented a player trusting her game when the stakes became real.

Other students have followed with victories, deep runs, final tables and breakthrough performances. Some have returned to the winner's circle multiple times.

Repeat champions matter because they demonstrate that success was not limited to one fortunate day. Winning repeatedly requires adjustment, emotional resilience, discipline and continued development. A trophy is a result. A repeat champion is evidence of a process. That process is what we build.

Celebrating Progress Before the Trophy

Not every important victory comes with a trophy. Sometimes the breakthrough is entering a live tournament for the first time. Sometimes it is surviving the anxiety of sitting at an unfamiliar table. Sometimes it is making a difficult fold, or raising instead of calling, or recognizing tilt before it controls the next hand. Sometimes it is speaking confidently to a dealer or floor person, or reviewing a mistake without attacking yourself.

Those moments matter. Poker development is rarely a straight line. A player may improve dramatically before the results become visible, and variance can hide good decisions while rewarding poor ones in the short term.

That is why we teach students to evaluate the quality of the decision, not simply the outcome. You can play a hand beautifully and lose. You can play poorly and win. The river card does not always tell the truth about the decision. Progress must be measured more honestly.

Learning Through Community

Joey's Angels was designed as more than a coach-and-student relationship. It is a community. Students discuss hands, share experiences, prepare for tournaments and support one another through the emotional swings of poker.

When one Angel succeeds, the entire group learns. When one Angel struggles, the group reminds her she does not have to struggle alone.

Poker can be isolating, especially when friends or family do not understand tournament variance, bad beats, long sessions or the emotional investment required to improve. A supportive study community changes that. Students begin realizing that the challenges they experience are not unique. Others have feared elimination. Others have struggled with confidence. Others have played too tightly, too loosely, too passively or too emotionally.

Honest conversation removes shame and creates growth. The Angels do not need to compete against one another to become stronger. There is room for all of them to rise.

The Meaning Behind the Name

The name Joey's Angels reflects the spirit of the group. It represents guidance, support, courage, intuition and community.

An Angel is not weak. She is observant. She is prepared. She knows when to be patient and when to act. She can be compassionate away from the table and fearless at it. She supports other women while still competing to win.

She recognizes that kindness and strength are not opposites. She respects dealers, players, staff and the game itself. She takes responsibility for her decisions. She continues learning. She understands that confidence is not arrogance and intuition is not guesswork.

Most importantly, an Angel knows she belongs.

Building Players Who Think for Themselves

The greatest compliment a coach can receive is not hearing a student repeat his words. It is watching her make a strong decision independently.

I want Joey's Angels students to understand concepts deeply enough to adapt when the situation changes. Poker rarely presents the exact same hand twice. Stack sizes differ. Positions differ. Opponents differ. Tournament incentives differ. A student who only memorizes answers may become lost when one variable changes. A student who understands principles can adjust.

That is why we focus on reasoning:

• Why did you bet?
• Why did you choose that size?
• What worse hands can call?
• What better hands can fold?
• What range is being represented?
• What story is the opponent telling?
• What information changed?
• What would you do differently against another player type?

These questions create independent thinkers. And independent thinkers become dangerous poker players.

The Vision

My vision for Joey's Angels extends far beyond one study group. I want to create a recognized home for women who want serious poker education delivered with respect, patience and personal attention.

I want newer players to feel welcome. I want experienced players to feel challenged. I want champions to continue evolving. I want students to develop the technical skill to compete in major events and the emotional strength to handle whatever the game gives them.

I want Joey's Angels represented at final tables, national championships, major poker series and local tournaments across the country. I want women walking into poker rooms with confidence, clarity and a sense of belonging. I want our repeat champions to inspire the next generation of Angels.

Most importantly, I want the program to remain personal. Growth should never become so large that we forget the individual player. Every Angel has a story. Every Angel has different goals. Every Angel deserves to be seen.

More Than Poker

The lessons learned inside Joey's Angels do not remain at the table.

Poker teaches patience. It teaches emotional control. It teaches decision-making under uncertainty. It teaches us to accept that we cannot control every outcome, to release what no longer serves us, to recognize opportunity, and to take responsibility without drowning in regret. It teaches us that one bad hand does not define the session and one difficult chapter does not define a life.

A player who learns to trust herself at the table may begin trusting herself elsewhere. She may become more confident at work. More willing to speak up. More comfortable setting boundaries. More resilient after disappointment. More decisive when opportunity appears.

Poker becomes a classroom for life. That is one of the deepest purposes behind Joey's Angels.

We Are Still Building

Joey's Angels is already producing champions, friendships and personal breakthroughs. But we are still building.

Every new student adds another story. Every study session creates another opportunity. Every final table expands what the group believes is possible. Every championship raises the standard.

The future of Joey's Angels will be shaped by the women who enter the community, commit to their development and support the Angels who come after them. This is not only my poker school. It belongs to every student who has asked a question, shared a hand, encouraged another player, faced a fear, entered a tournament or trusted herself when it mattered.

We are building something larger than a collection of lessons. We are building confidence. We are building community. We are building independent thinkers. We are building champions.
